About the book

Ella is looking for a hot race not a hot guy, but that cute, heartthrob mechanic, J.D., gets her motor running. Will he still want to kiss her when she beats him to the finish line? And how did she lose her shoe?

An excerpt from the book

Dragger Ella
By C. Margery Kempe

Ella closed the hood and wiped her hands on the rag hanging out of her pocket. “She’s ready.”

With a grin spreading like sunshine across her face, she looked over at her friend, Jeri, whose lips contracted into a moue of concern.

“No, not really,” Jeri said at last.

Ella turned her attention to buffing out a stray grease mark from the gleaming hood of the cherry red Ford.

“You are so not going through with this!” Jeri insisted.

Ella put her hands on her hips. “You think I’ve spent all year rebuilding her engine and shining her chrome just to drive to the mall?”

“Hey, I shined most of that chrome, sister,” Jeri said. “But the South End? You think that’s a good idea? Your gran isn’t going to be happy about that.”

“Shut up!” Ella shot a look toward the kitchen window, but her grandmother did not appear. Since she could remember, the woman had had an unnerving habit of popping up whenever Jeri and she were conspiring.

As if reading Ella’s thoughts, Jeri tossed a look over her shoulder, too. “You know she’s going to find out. Somehow, someway, you know she will.”

Ella tossed the oily rag at Jeri, who dodged it easily.

“Not this time, girly girl,” Ella said. “I’ve got it all planned. I’ll make my debut, and I will blow them all off the road. What’s the good of having a sweet custom hot rod if we can’t show it off?”

Jeri shook her head. “I hear the cops busted a bunch of draggers up there. You don’t want to get mixed up in that.”

“Yes, I do.”

Jeri sighed. “This is about your dad, isn’t it? Still?”

Ella crossed her arms. “It’s what he would have wanted.”

Jeri snorted. “Did a little bluebird fly by and tell you that? Did it say, ‘hey, Ella, your daddy whispered to me in heaven and he said, by all means, girls, risk your life drag racing in the streets so you can come up here and join me real soon’?”

“I’ll be fine.” Ella sneaked another peak up at the kitchen window, but there was no sign of her gran. “You know he would want Cherry Bomb to be triumphant once more.”

Jeri threw herself down into the lawn chair sitting on the gravel beside the driveway. The chair’s old, aluminum frame gave a frightening squeak, and for a moment, Ella expected the whole thing to collapse.

“Ella, it’s not as if he died in the car—”

“I know,” Ella said, her voice low. “It might have been better for him if he had. He would have loved going out like that, instead of the, the—straw death he got.”

“Straw death?” Jeri cocked an eyebrow.

Ella smiled. “I see you weren’t listening in English class this week.”

“Yeah, surprising, isn’t it? Less than a month left of our last year of high school and you think I’m listening to anything? Besides, that woman scares me.” Ms. Fountain had been the bane of Jeri’s existence this last year.

“But don’t you just love the stuff about the Vikings? That’s what they called dying when you weren’t in battle. A straw death. Dying in bed instead of in a fight. It was the biggest disappointment.”

“What, they lived in barns?”

“Their beds were made of straw, silly.” She grabbed Jeri’s arm. “Now c’mon. We have a little story to concoct for gran.”

Noble Treasure Hunt

WELCOME TREASURE HUNTERS!

Our next contest is a treasure hunt! Beginning on May 22nd, Noble Romance Publishing will be sponsoring a treasure hunt. Your ultimate prize will be a shiny new Kindle.

Now here’s how it works:

1. You must sign up to play. Email your name and contact email address to: treasurehunt@nobleromance.com. Registrations will be accepted until May 24th.

2. On the morning of May 22nd, in each registrant’s email, you will receive a play sheet, with all the instructions you’ll need to join the fun.

3. Using the play sheet, you’ll visit each listed author’s website and spend some time checking out their back lists, while searching for a specially marked Noble Romance book cover.

4. Once you’ve found the book cover at each site, write down the code found beneath each book. You will need these codes to unscramble the words and win the Kindle.

5. The codes are the secret to the prize. All will be explained on the play sheet.

Along the way, you will undoubtedly find books you’d like to check out. During this treasure hunt, all books on the participating author’s Noble Romance back lists will be on sale.

The aim of the game is to locate all the book covers listed and unscramble the answers to two questions.

There’s no need to chase around the country looking for clues, because this is a virtual treasure hunt and everything can be done online from the comfort of your own home.

This game will tap your knowledge of the romance genre, but we promise, most every fan of romance has a more than fighting chance. However, this contest will put your wits and ingenuity to the test.

You must register by emailing your name and email address to: treasurehunt@nobleromance.com, to receive your play sheet.

Clues will be sent to each registrant on morning of May 22nd and all solutions must be emailed back to treasurehunt@nobleromance.com, no later than midnight, May 26th. You have plenty of time to find all the book covers and get to know the authors of those books.

Winner will be announced during the day on May 27th.

The first entry picked out of the correct solutions will win a new Kindle e-reader.
Other prizes will be awarded as well, including author swag and gift cards for Noble Romance.

Void where prohibited. United States entries only please.

YA Romance

My story Dragger Ella has been released simultaneously as a both an Erotic Romance and as part of the new Noble line of Young Adult (YA) Romances. This is a first for me. The decision was made because the characters are actually high school seniors just about to graduate. I hadn’t really thought about that when I wrote it: I figured that the folks dragging around Connecticut’s streets were likely younger (there had been a few news stories about them) because older people just generally have more to risk (and could afford to be part of the semi-pro world of drag racing rather than racing in the streets.

But I don’t really know. Thanks again to Johnny 10X for his insight and assistance!

I added some local colour — mentioning towns and cities around the quiet corner and mid-Connecticut. There’s a direct reference to the Witch’s Dungeon and more oblique one to the Road Agents’ Hot Rod and Rockabilly Rumble (because I don’t think they run them any more). Yes, this is another one of my fairy tales; still plugging away at them while I work on other things. Despite the brevity of the individual tales, I hope to have a nice collection to put together perhaps by the end of the year if I can keep up the pace :-)

A Fairytale Obsession

Today’s the release date for my latest fairytale Naught Nibble from Noble Romance (say that three times fast!). Love Me Like a Reptile revisits the story of the Frog Prince with a bit of a twist of the tale. Yes, it all sprang from the Motörhead song — a most unlikely source for romance, I think, but that’s how my head works. Most people get a song stuck in their heads and get annoyed; I get a song stuck in my head and I get a story.

The tagline:

Madeley thought she’d kissed a lot of frogs in her time—but this one insists he really is a prince. How far is she willing to go to find out if it’s true?

It’s set in London, like so many of my stories; I miss being there and can’t wait to be back. I watched the show Sherlock this weekend and it made me yearn for the city of my heart even more (and it’s a terrific show!).

Yes, this is going to be a continuing series of Nibbles linked by this theme. You’ll remember Spinning Gold, my retelling of the Rapunzel story. That was the first. Next up is a new version of Cinderella

Why is it always fairytales with me? Well, drop by UnBound for our Ravenous Wednesday to hear me (or um, read me) going on about the topic at length with out lovely host Dana/Inara and usual suspects like Adele AKA Hagelrat, loyal Jack and the other Ravenous stalwarts.

Love Me Like a Reptile

Just looked over the final edits for my latest fairy tale, “Love Me Like a Reptile,” which will be out from Noble Romance later this month. I can’t wait to see what kind of cover it’s going to have! Since I don’t have that yet, here’s the original inspiration for the title :-)

Review: Spinning Gold

Elisabeth B. over at Bitten by Books has reviewed Spinning Gold, my Noble Romance Naughty Nibble, and had some good things to say about it:

“Spinning Gold” was an amusing take on the old Rumpelstiltskin tale where a young maiden is doomed to try and spin straw into gold – only this time around, that maiden is actually a man. It was interesting to consider that though Frea was genetically male, he lived his life as a woman and was highly skilled with textiles. The root of his father’s boast were grounded in actual mastery, and yet the drunkard gave no care as to how his behavior would affect his son. The story took on a more sexual bent than the traditional story and yet it seemed almost as innocent. The twists and turns at the end were both surprising and pleasing, if somewhat convenient. I enjoyed reading this…

Read the rest over at Bitten by Books and be sure to leave a comment to let them know you were there. It’s a delight to have reviews that are as detailed as this, particularly for a short story, and that show such knowledge of the genres. Yes, I do have a thing about folk and fairy-tales and I’m glad some other folks do, too.

I’m at work on two more short fairy tale stories and I have another with Jill at Noble. Fingers crossed that she likes them all: I look forward to having a nice collection of steamy and magical tales!

Reviewed: Spinning Gold

Check out the fabulous review by Eliza Rolle for my Noble Romance Naughty Nibble, “Spinning Gold”. Here’s a snippet:

This is only a short story, less than 25 pages, and obviously it can’t be so much developed, but nevertheless it’s a nice tale. Here obviously it can’t be arisen the old question of the chick in boy dress, since it’s clear that Freawyine is a boy who behaves like a girl: he was raised in that way, he is aware to be a boy, he is even well aware of his body desires, and not at all ashamed to satisfy them all alone in his bed, but for all the other side of his personality he is a girl. He likes boys, he thinks and behaves as a girl, he is not daring or strong, and he is fragile and delicate.

An excerpt:
His dreams were filled with an ever-changing series of images, from the prince fighting off warriors in the holy lands or boars in the forest, to more tender images of the man beside him in the bed, their arms and legs entwined. So it came as a bit of a surprise to hear the voice call to him as Freawine struggled up from his dreams. “Will you sleep the day away, girl?”

Freawine rubbed his eyes and moved to throw back the covers, stilling his hand as he realized he had grown stiff from his lascivious dreams. The prince did not seem to notice his anxiety. He paced around the room with an energetic stride.

“May I go home, Your Highness?” Freawine managed to stutter at last.

“Home?” The prince stared into the coals of the fireplace. “Are you so eager to return there? Miss your family?”

“There’s only my father and me,” Freawine answered, willing his erection to calm itself so he could rise.

“Your father who risks your life by making drunken boasts?”

Freawine flushed. “Yes, Your Highness.”

“Doesn’t seem like much to miss.” He turned to regard Freawine. “What is your name?”

“Frea.”

He nodded, as if it were the right answer somehow. “Well, Frea, I have an offer for you.”

Freawine studied him. Something about the man seemed different. He looked as if he’d slept badly. His hair stuck up in different directions, his beard seemed even more unruly.

“One more night.” The prince returned his stare.

Freawine winced. His erection disappeared.

“If you can spin all the straw into gold tonight, I have a special reward for you.” He turned and looked at Freawine like a fox eyeing a chicken. “I will make you my queen.”
